COMMENT TO THE PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH COMMITTEE
A. Joseph Layon, MD
Chair, University of Florida Faculty Senate
16 May, 2000
Noon
University of Florida Brain Institute
LG-110

Colleagues and members of the committee, the Faculty of the University of Florida, one component of the pentad- students, staff, administration, alumni, and faculty- making up our university community is pleased to be able to address you this afternoon. I will keep my comments brief.

As the soul of our University, the Faculty is keenly interested in the direction and progress of our search for a new President. It is our desire to contribute as this process unfolds.

The leadership of the UF Faculty Senate, elected for the first time in the history of the body wishes to make its' voice heard as the search continues. We want to have a voice not only in the selection of applicants, but in their interview process as well. Open fora, while significant, are not the place to have detailed discussions, questions answered, and positions proposed.

Finally, we wish to have a role in shaping the decision for the slate of candidates that will be sent to Chancellor Herbert.

For the present, we are pleased and proud of our interim President, Charles Young. He has shown himself to be a leader of vision, a man strong enough to take into consideration the counsel of his colleagues. A man who recognizes that a university should incorporate grass roots input from the pentad, and especially from its faculty, to continue as a first class- world-class- institution. We support the leadership of President Young for as long as he wishes to stay. We are committed to work with you to find a comparable world class leader for our University of Florida. Thank you. I will be happy to answer any questions you might have.

Thank you.
