approved by the University Senate on
April 20, 2000
(by a vote of 44 in favor, 7 opposed, 2 abstain)

"Resolved that the University Senate calls upon the Board of Regents to suspend, then extend the present search for a new President of the University of Florida on two grounds:

"Uncertainties about the governance of Florida's institutions of higher learning may well have compromised the present search by limiting access to applicants of the highest qualifications.

"The present slate of candidates does not represent institutions at parity with, or better than, the University of Florida. As the only university in the state of Florida belonging to the Association of American Universities, the University of Florida must be led by someone with proven, nationally recognized achievements as both scholar and academic leader. An appropriate candidate list must reflect the need for the University of Florida to position itself among the topmost public institutions in the Association of American Universities.

"We therefore call upon the cognizant authorities to renew the search once this debate concerning the uncertainties of governance of Florida institutions of higher learning is resolved, with criteria that reflect UF's current status and legitimate aspirations."
