December 7, 2000 REVIEW
OF UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATORS Annual
Evaluation: The
President and/or the Provost will evaluate the Vice Presidents, Deans, and
Program Directors in an annual letter of evaluation. This evaluation will
be based on job performance and contribution to the mission of the
University of Florida. Periodic
Faculty Evaluation: In addition to the annual evaluation prepared by the President and the Provost, the faculty and appropriate administrators will evaluate Vice Presidents, Deans, and Program Directors during their third year in office and every three years thereafter. A standard one-page form has been developed for this purpose and will be circulated to the faculty and administrators by the Provost’s office. In the case of the Provost and Vice Presidents, those faculty members, other administrators, and staff who fill out the assessment should have some reasonably regular contact with them. The results of these evaluations will be shared with the President and Provost as appropriate and will be part of the annual letters of evaluation. A
college that has an annual tradition of soliciting faculty evaluations of
the Dean may continue to do so. And a Vice President or Dean who has a
particular need to collect faculty evaluation data on a more frequent
basis may do so in consultation with the Provost. All
such evaluations will be coordinated with the Provost’s office and the
forms will be distributed from the Provost’s office to the faculty and
appropriate administrators and the completed forms will be returned to the
Provost’s office. The results of the evaluations will be shared with the
Vice Presidents and Deans in the annual letter of evaluation. Formal
Performance Review: A
formal performance review for Vice Presidents, Deans, and Program
Directors will generally occur at the same time as the college
accreditation process, but will be separate from it. For those Deans
without a professional accreditation and for those with multiple
accreditation reviews, the formal performance review will be conducted no
later than the end of the fifth year of service and at five-year intervals
thereafter. For
those Deans and Directors whose colleges and programs are reviewed
regularly by accreditation committees, a performance review will accompany
this process to ensure that faculty members and donors/alumni have an
opportunity to assess the administrator’s performance. In
cases involving other Vice Presidents, Deans, and Directors, the President
and Provost shall appoint a performance review committee to assess the
administrator’s performance and accomplishments. The President will
appoint a performance review committee for the Provost. The performance
review committee shall be selected by the President and Provost in
consultation with the Dean, the Faculty Senate and faculty leadership of
the college, and shall consist of a dean from another college, at least
five members of the faculty, and at least one alumnus or donor of the
college (selected in consultation with the dean). The
President and/or Provost will charge the performance review committee with
its specific responsibilities. The performance review committee will issue
a formal report to the President and the Provost. As part of this process,
the Dean/Program Director will provide a statement indicating his/her
goals and accomplishments over the previous five years. The performance
review report should assess the College/Program’s effectiveness in
developing academic goals and identifying future needs. The evaluation
might include but not be restricted to the following issues: the
achievement of the academic and strategic goals over time, success in
fundraising, interaction with faculty, staff, students, and alumni,
overall leadership and communication, promotion of diversity on campus,
and promotion of excellence in scholarship, research, and teaching. The
President will discuss the performance reviews of Vice Presidents, and it
will serve as a basis for reappointment decisions. The Provost will
discuss the performance review with the Vice Provosts, Associate Provosts,
and Dean/Program Director, and it will also serve as a basis for
reappointment decisions. |
