The UF Approach: Natural Resources and Environment
The College of Natural Resources and Environment (CNRE) was
organized as a virtual college, operating with one Dean,
two staff members, and faculty from many disciplines in
other colleges. It has been proposed that the college
become a school (SNRE) in the College of Agriculture and Life
Sciences (CALS) which is the academic arm of the Institute for
Agriculture and Food Science (IFAS). Below is a brief chronology,
and some materials posted on the CNRE web site and by the Registrar.
Chronology
- On May 7, 2003, the University Curriculum Committee
receives the Revised Proposal with signatures by
Martin, Cheek, Khargonekar, and Sullivan, and passes it.
Jane Luzar makes an analogy to the existing
School of Forest Resources and Conservation (FRC).

- May 2, 2003:
Revised Proposal for a School of Natural Resources and Environment.
- At the March 20, 2003 Faculty Senate meeting,
the February 28 proposal is included in the Chair's report,
as an item to prepare for in the future. No substantive
discussion of the proposal occurs. Provost Colburn
states it will come to the Faculty Senate before coming
to the Board of Trustees.
- On March 17, 2003, the faculty forum is held.
VP Martin, Deans Cheek, Khargonekar, Sullivan and
Humphrey speak. Martin hands out the February 28
proposal, and states that this issue will come to
the Faculty Senate before going to the Board of Trustees.
- On March 13, 2003, VP Martin issues a DDD Memorandum
announcing an open faculty forum on the reorganization
stating in part ``the proposed
handling for the structural, governance, and faculty participation
issues associated with the transition will be reviewed.''
- February 28, 2003: Preliminary
Proposal for a School of Natural Resources and Environment (pdf)
- The
Strategic Plan developed in 2002 called for the College of Natural
Resources and Environment to be moved into the College of Agriculture
and Life Sciences as a school.
