Jeffrey Spieler Nomination of Jeffrey Spieler for Honorary Doctorate of Public Service (DPS) The University of Florida Honorary Degree Committee recommends that Jeffrey Spieler be awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Public Service to recognize his contributions as scientist and statesman to further global reproductive health policies. Since Jeffrey Spieler graduated from the University of Florida (Zoology, 1967), he has pursued with passion and ability the use of science and humanity to enhance global reproduction health issues. Allan Rosenfield, the Delamar Professor at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University, writes, "Jeff has provided superb leadership in directing the research programs of the Center for Population, Health and Nutrition at the USAID, and he is deeply committed to public service and to the improvement of the health and well-being of women and families in poor countries throughout the world." Noel McIntosh, president of JHPIEGO Corporation, says, "Over the years I have observed few individuals who have contributed more to global population stabilization than Jeff" and lauds him as a "brilliant, talented scientist." Willard Cates, president of Family Health International, describes him as "one of the top five opinion leaders in the field of global reproductive health." G. Perkins, director of the Global Health Programs at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, remarks that Mr. Spieler "has effectively represented the United States government at a variety of international fora. He speaks with authority and conviction while enjoying enormous respect among his peers." Mr. Spieler, an alumnus of the University of Florida, has clearly excelled by shaping the discussion on reproductive health issues at the level of the planet and is making noted contributions to its long-term well-being.
