Proposed Motions For Part 2 Action Items
March 14, 2002 Faculty Senate Meeting

Evaluation of Administrators:

Motion to establish a regular and comprehensive evaluation of administrative officials by the faculty.

The Faculty Senate of the University of Florida, believing that a regular and comprehensive evaluation of administrative officials by the faculty is essential to the continual improvement of the university served by those officials, commissions the Faculty Senate Shared Governance Committee to develop such evaluation procedures, return them to the Faculty Senate for approval, and implement them.

Faculty Mentors:

Motion to investigate the need for mentors for our undergraduates, minimally freshmen and sophomores.

  1. The Faculty Senate of the University of Florida asks that the administration (Student Affairs / Registrar) query freshmen, sophomores and incoming students as to their interest in having a faculty mentor assigned to them upon arrival at UF.
  2. The Faculty Senate asks that the survey be carried out within 3 months and the data reported to the Senate Steering Committee.
  3. If the data support further action, the Faculty Senate requests that the Steering Committee create an ad hoc committee to develop a proposal to provide, minimally, freshmen with faculty / staff mentors. This ad hoc committee would also be asked to consider the support required for this program and whether untenured faculty should be asked--or even allowed--to take part.

Overseas Programs and International Center Reorganization:

Motion to form an ad hoc committee to advise the Chair in formulating a response to President Young's position on the issue of reorganization of the overseas programs and the International Center.

The Faculty Senate of the University of Florida commissions the Faculty Senate Steering Committee to create an ad hoc committee to advise the Chair in formulating a response to President Young's position on the issue of reorganization of the overseas programs and the International Center. The Senate is concerned that this is an academic quality issue, within the purview of the Faculty Senate, as well as a budgetary issue, within the purview of the Administration.
