Resolution in Support of the Sustainability Task Force Final Report Recommendations

UF Faculty Senate

WHEREAS the University of Florida Faculty Senate supports the United Nations General Assembly’s 1987 World Commission on Environment and Development’s Brundtland Report, which concluded that our common future depends on sustainable development, defined as “Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations to meet their own needs,” and  

WHEREAS UF President John Lombardi in 1991 joined over 290 university presidents and chancellors in 40 countries in signing the Talloires Declaration which advocates, among other things, that universities create an institutional culture of sustainability and encourages all universities to engage in education, research, policy formation, and information exchange on population, environment, and development to move toward global sustainability, and

WHEREAS the University of Florida Faculty Senate and Office of the President jointly appointed the Sustainability Task Force in March 2001, and

WHEREAS the Sustainability Task Force was charged with researching and recommending actions required to make the University of Florida a global leader in sustainability, and

WHEREAS the Faculty Senate supports the President’s mission of enhancing the University of Florida’s world-class status, and

WHEREAS the Sustainability Task Force Final Report (July 2002) recommends that a detailed implementation plan be developed in the next twelve months, and

WHEREAS Sustainability Task Force members represent academic units, the student body, administrative affairs, auxiliary units, and the community.

BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Faculty Senate endorses the Sustainability Task Force’s Final Report, affirms the continuation of the Sustainability Task Force’s term until Fall 2004, charges the Task Force with developing a detailed implementation plan, and petitions the President to continue his support of this joint body by ratifying this resolution.
